Live Oak Learning Center opened in 2011.  This new school replaced Live Oak Elementary School, which was constructed in 1967.  The new school’s architect specified Sport Court® Response gym flooring with a curriculum based layout.   This design provided inlaid elements to aid the coaching staff with their programming.

Hurricane Harvey

On August 25, 2017 Hurricane Harvey brought crushing winds and flooding rains to the Texas coast.  Live Oak Learning Center, located in Rockport, Texas was engulfed in the storm.  While many buildings in the Rockport area suffered total devastation, the school had less visible damage.  But, despite not having any overwhelming structural harm, flood waters had entered the building.

Flood Remediation

The Sport Court® gym flooring at Live Oak Learning Center survived the storm undamaged.  However, the flood had brought with it sewage, bacteria, and plenty of sediment.  Salvaging the gym floor or any other ground level items was not possible.  There was simply no way to fully clean and sanitize.  Clean up crews with Northstar Recovery Services had to remove everything.  And, it all went to the landfill.

Curriculum PE Floor Design

The school chose to stick with the same layout and colors as the original floor.  The design included four square courts and a running track circling the basketball court.  Another important element in the design were seating squares spread across the floor.  These are individual pieces of flooring, usually an accent color, inlaid at regular intervals throughout the floor.  These seating squares aid coaching staff and students, when activities require students to spread out across the floor.

Installing the New Gym Floor

Installation of the new Sport Court® Response gym floor began on December 26, 2017.  Response flooring is available with a pearlescent or high gloss urethane finish.  Live Oak Learning Center chose to stick with the non-glossy pearlescent surface.  With a crew of 6, we installed the floor in 2 days and then took a 3rd day to complete the detail work trimming pieces along walls and to fit at doorways.

We returned on January 4, 2018 to install the sanitary cove molding and to paint the stripes. The molding had not been in the original contract and was added as a last minute change order.  Luckily, Sport Court® manufacturing was able to expedite the shipment of the molding so as not to delay completion.  Students got to see the new Sport Court® gym floor when they returned to campus on January 10.

Future Layout Changes

PE Floor Seating Squares

In May 2020, Thomas Lawing, Coordinator of Operational Services, requested a slight change to the floor design.  He indicated that the coaches needed more seating squares to accommodate the growing student population.  Making these types of changes to an existing gym floor takes less than an hour, when the floor is Sport Court®.
