Primary Pickleball Court Construction Considerations
Primary Pickleball Court Construction Considerations
Sport Court® Surface
Sport Court® Surface
In 2021 the design and engineering team at Connor Sport Court Inc. introduced Sport Game PB. This entirely new pickleball surface was designed specifically for pickleball. It marries optimal ball performance with the enhanced safety that Sport Court® is known for. Sport Game PB is available in 19 colors which can be mixed to create your custom court layout. Acrylic Surface
Acrylic Surface
Most of today’s tennis courts have a painted acrylic surface. This type of surface became the default pickleball surface when thousands of seldom used tennis courts were restriped for pickleball. Acrylic is a lower cost surface ideal for courts where safety and longevity are not the top priority. Unlike Sport Court® surfacing, acrylic does not provide any impact protection or have a long life span.
Court Size
Court Size
The standard minimum size for a pickleball court is 30’ x 60’. This provides a buffer between the fence and the court of 8’ at the service lines and 5’ at the side lines. However, if you have more space, then use it. The 30’ x 60’ minimum guideline is just a minimum. Nothing says that you cannot go bigger. Or, if space is restricted, then you can also go slightly smaller.

Pickleball Game Net
Pickleball Game Net
We recommend a permanent pickleball net, rather than a portable net. Permanent nets are made for sustained outdoor use and are usually much sturdier than portable nets. However, if your pickleball court also serves other purposes, then a portable net might be the best choice.
Court Lighting
Court Lighting
A 30’ x 60’ pickleball court is sufficiently lit with two LED 28,000 lumen lamps atop a single post. Each lamp is tilted to flood light across each side of the court. Community guidelines may restrict lighting. Some areas require that outdoor lights aim straight down, so as not to flood surrounding areas too much. We have also seen rules pertaining light color temperature, restricting lights to a warm yellow glow rather than cool bright white.
Perimeter Fence
Perimeter Fence
For those who want maximum ball containment, we recommend a 10’ fence. But, if a 10’ fence looks too confining, the a shorter fence is still better than no fence. If your court is in your backyard, then a net fence is the lowest priced option. On the other hand, chain link fencing provides greater strength and durability for public courts.
