School of Science and Technology Discovery

The School of Science and Technology charter school system has chosen Sport Court® Response flooring for all of their locations.  The Discovery campus is the 5th SST campus in San Antonio to get a Sport Court® gym floor.  We’ve also installed flooring at their campuses in Corpus Christi.  And, our Houston office has worked at schools in that region.

In addition to gym flooring, we also provide SST with gym equipment such as basketball goals, volleyball systems, wall pads, and entry rugs.

Staff at the School of Science and Technology Discovery campus asked us to look at this project in 2019.  At that time the cushioned floor was 3 years old.  But, it was already showing signs that replacement was due.  This included some areas where the blue colored surface skin was peeling away.  The floor also had a few tears and needed to be repaired.

These types of floors seldom reach 10 years of age.  And, if they do, it’s usually with numerous visible patches.  But, shortened lifespan isn’t the only problem with these cushioned floors.  They also lack proper shock absorption fundamentals and never have appropriate surface traction.  This article provides additional information about various types of gym flooring and where it should be used.

When we looked at this project in 2019, we identified some irregularities.  First, the basketball goals were hanging above the court’s baseline.  These would need to be moved.  Second, the wall pads had not been properly installed.  They were not anchored correctly and were detaching from the walls.  Lastly, the volleyball sleeves would need to be moved.  This was due to moving the basketball goals and shifting the court’s centerlines.

A crew from Texas Sports Equipment handled the relocation of the basketball goals.  Our crew took care of the wall pads and the volleyball sleeves.  We also replaced some of the VCT flooring in the hallways just outside the gym.

The cushioned floor was applied on top of Mondo backer board.  This made the removal process easier than anticipated since it was only glued at the perimeter.  The junk floor was ripped into large pieces with a BlastPro motorized floor scrapper.  It was then cut into smaller pieces with a reciprocating saw and thrown into a dumpster outside.  The entire process was done in a single day.

The concrete floor slab at the School of Science and Technology Discovery campus was a bit uneven.  It appeared that leveling cement had been applied at some time before the cushioned floor was installed.  But, this prior leveling was far from perfect.  And, some of the leveling cement had been damaged by the flooring removal process.

We brought in Clean Air Flooring Removal to fine tune the surface before the Sport Court® gym flooring was installed.  This was a 2 day process as the first layer of leveling cement needed to dry before the second layer could be applied.

The School of Science and Technology Discovery campus chose a multi-colored design.  The basketball court would be Light Maple Select with Deep Blue Maple lanes.  It would be inlaid with Rustic Maple seating squares.  These help staff organize students across the gym floor.  The space outside the court is navy.  And, all of the flooring has Sport Court’s factory applied multi-layered high gloss urethane topcoat.

Unlike the cushioned floor that we removed, Sport Court® gym flooring absorbs energy both vertically and laterally.  This is unique.  No other flooring system provides this dual shock absorption benefit.  And, no other floor provides the same injury reductions as Sport Court® Response.
